first weeks

Posted by Picasa so that everyone is on the same page, here's the intro:
i've recently graduated from the university of the arts in philadelphia with a bfa in crafts - jewelry/metals. i'm now spending ten months in tallinn, estonia on a grant through the us dept. of state fulbright program. i hope to learn more about ancient estonian jewelry, including the work of an indigenous population called the setus, and how jewelry in this region has progressed over the years. i will be affiliated with the estonian academy of arts in tallinn and will also be looking at contemporary jewelry. all of this with the hope that i will be able to make a body of my own work while i am here in response to my research and experiences.

so it's been almost two weeks now and i'm loving tallinn. the first week was busy with getting adjusted, finding an apartment, getting a cell, etc. everything's been going pretty smoothly, except that time i got on the bus and suddenly didn't recognize anything. i wound up just staying on until the end of the line then going right back to the section of the city i was familiar with. even that was a good experience though, now i know where the zoo is!

my sister rose was here for the past week helping me get settled. we spent lots of time decorating my apartment and eating in restaraunts, everything from medieval food to a swanky restaraunt that includes apples in every menu item. we even conducted an experiment to find out if estonian mcdonalds tastes the same as in the states, it does, exactly the same. we found that to be a bit disturbing.

Trudee: What a great blog with beautiful photos. I can't believe how "comfy" your pad looks. I'm also happy to know you can find the zoo, too. How wonderful that Rose could be there at such a critical time.

Keep us posted on your experiences. Thanks for sharing!

Love,
Sarah

I'm so sad I missed your phone call this morning, but seeing your pictures and hearing a little bit about how things are going made it a little bit better. Your apartment looks fantastic and I'm so happy to hear everything is already going so well. Keep us posted and try calling again sometime soon!

Hello Trudee,
I was suprised to have been on your mailing list. I am very excited for you. Tallin looks so beautiful you must bee so happy. I wish you the best there. I hope you find it to be what you were expecting, either way it is the experince and the adventure that is the most exciting part about going somewhere far, especially for studies.
Thank you for keeping in touch. I look foward to seeing how your progress is coming.

Good luck with everything,

Trudee,
I'm still a bit behind on how the grant actually came thru, but I'm so happy for you that it did! As everyone else has said, the pictures are gorgeous. Hopefully everyone in Estonia will quickly learn how fancy you are and love your unique choices of material in your pieces ;) Miss you!

Please check out this site and these amazing ladies in Tallinn. I just found your card the same day you emailed your blogdress.
Funny
klimt02.net is a spot to find shows and events.
The group of five artists that taught at Mass Art last June are called ffff.
They had a site last summer, but it's not as easy to find this evening? No wait, it's this one:
www.hot.ee/groupffff/
Here are their names. You may have heard em:
Kristi Paap
Kaire Rannik
Berit Teeaar
Ketli Tiitsar(she was teaching)
Varia Valdma
Does 'koruja' mean jewelry? their postcard is all beautifully full of vowels, so I can't understand.
This is a gallery address:

Turun Kulttuurikeskus
Vanhan Raaihuoneen Galleria
Vanha Suurtori 5, 20500 Turku
Avoinna ma-pe 12-19, la-su 11-17 (looks like the hours of operation! Phew!)

Yay! Looks like you'll have a great time! Seems too that you will become more intimate with vowels that ever before. I wonder how it'll affect your work!?!?!!

Hi again...I just though of something.
Maybe you should contact LorI Talcott once you get into your studies. She just spent a year in Norwary studying and teaching. She's a great resource for ancient/medieval traditions. She studied in Norway many years ago(after she got out of the metals program at U of Washington maybe 10 or so years ago) with folks that are working in a tradition passed down from, well, heaps of generations. She wanted a living tradition from medieval times or earlier. Let me know if'n you wnat her address/email.
Okay, goodnight!
